A London museum day without trying to see everything

8:20

A free museum can still cost you an afternoon of rushing around. London has enough rooms, paintings and objects to defeat any checklist. A better starting point is a small question: what would make this visit worth the journey?

Choose the visit before choosing the route

The National Gallery and the British Museum both offer free entry to their permanent collections. That does not mean every exhibition is free or that entry arrangements never change. Check each museum’s own visit page before travelling; a free booking can also make arrival easier.

Pick one museum as the main visit. Paintings and the history of objects offer very different days, and doing both properly is more ambitious than it looks on a map.

Make a three-item list

Choose one work or room you particularly want to see, one nearby area to explore and one optional stop. Keep the list somewhere you can read without a mobile connection. If a room is closed or crowded, you still have another reason to be there.

A useful plan might read: arrive in the morning, visit the chosen room, walk through an adjacent gallery, then take a break. The point is to leave room for something unexpected rather than to collect photographs of labels.

Budget for the whole outing

Free admission is only one part of the cost. Transport, food, a paid exhibition and the gift shop can change the total. Decide in advance which extras matter to you. Check bag rules and accessibility information too, especially if you are arriving straight from a station with luggage.

For a second museum, treat it as an option rather than a promise. A short walk and an unhurried meal can be a better ending than another hour spent looking at objects you no longer have the energy to enjoy.

Before visiting: National Gallery access and booking information · British Museum visit information. Exhibition charges, room access and booking arrangements should be checked on the official sites.
